What Is Renal Artery Stenting?
Renal Artery Stenting is a minimally invasive Cath Lab procedure that opens narrowed arteries supplying blood to the kidneys. These arteries can become blocked by plaque buildup, a condition called renal artery stenosis, which may lead to high blood pressure, kidney damage, or decreased kidney function.
How the Procedure Works
During the procedure, a small catheter is inserted through the groin or wrist and guided to the narrowed renal artery using real-time imaging. A tiny balloon is inflated to open the artery (angioplasty), and a stent, a small metal mesh tube, is placed to keep the artery open and maintain normal blood flow to the kidneys.
The treatment is performed under local anesthesia, typically takes less than an hour, and most patients go home the same day.
Who Might Benefit from Renal Artery Stenting:
- Patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) that’s difficult to control with medication
- People with reduced kidney function due to poor blood flow
- Individuals with renal artery stenosis found during imaging studies
- Those experiencing congestive heart failure or sudden fluid buildup due to kidney-related circulation issues
Benefits of Renal Artery Stenting:
- Restores blood flow to the kidneys
- May help control blood pressure more effectively
- Helps protect kidney function and prevent further damage
- Minimally invasive procedure with fast recovery
- Performed in a comfortable, outpatient Cath Lab setting
