Understanding Deep Vein Thrombosis
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, most often in the leg. These clots can partially or completely block blood flow, leading to leg pain and swelling. In some cases, a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism (PE), a serious medical emergency.
At Ohio Vein and Vascular, our experienced vascular specialists across Ohio, including Columbus – Polaris, Mentor, Avon, Medina, Independence, and Canton, use advanced imaging and minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat DVT safely and effectively.
Common Symptoms
- Swelling in one leg (sometimes both)
- Pain or tenderness in the calf or thigh
- Skin that feels warm to the touch
- Redness or discoloration over the affected area
- A “tight” or heavy feeling in the leg
⚠️ If you experience sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing, call 911 immediately. These could be signs of a pulmonary embolism.
Why Prompt Evaluation Matters
Deep Vein Thrombosis requires prompt medical evaluation to prevent life-threatening complications and long-term vein damage. Left untreated, DVT can lead to post-thrombotic syndrome, a chronic condition that causes persistent swelling, pain, and skin changes in the leg.
At Ohio Vein and Vascular, early ultrasound and venous testing help identify DVT quickly so treatment can begin right away.
Advanced DVT Treatment Options
Our vascular specialists offer a range of minimally invasive treatments designed to dissolve or remove clots, restore circulation, and protect vein health:
- Anticoagulation Therapy: Medication to thin the blood and prevent further clot formation.
- Venous Intervention and Stenting: Used to open narrowed or blocked veins and restore normal flow.
- Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis: Delivers clot-dissolving medication directly into the affected vein.
- Atherectomy or Angioplasty: In select cases, these procedures may be used to improve blood flow in affected vessels.
Each treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s unique condition and circulation needs, with most procedures performed on an outpatient basis.
