Iliac Angioplasty and Stenting in Ohio

What Is Iliac Angioplasty and Stenting?

Iliac Angioplasty and Stenting is a minimally invasive Cath Lab procedure used to open narrowed or blocked arteries in the pelvis, known as the iliac arteries. These arteries are critical pathways that deliver oxygen-rich blood to your legs. When they become narrowed due to Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) or plaque buildup, circulation decreases, leading to leg pain, cramping, or fatigue when walking.

At Ohio Vein and Vascular, this advanced endovascular treatment is performed by our vascular specialists across Ohio using state-of-the-art imaging and stent technology to safely restore healthy blood flow and relieve symptoms.

How the Procedure Works

Using real-time X-ray guidance, a thin catheter is inserted into the artery, often through a small puncture in the groin. A tiny balloon is then inflated inside the narrowed area to widen the artery (angioplasty). Once opened, a small mesh tube called a stent is placed to keep the artery open and prevent it from narrowing again.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and typically takes less than an hour. Most patients return home the same day with minimal recovery time.

When Iliac Angioplasty and Stenting Is Recommended:

  • Leg pain or cramping while walking (claudication) caused by poor blood flow
  • Leg fatigue, heaviness, or weakness
  • Non-healing wounds or ulcers on the feet or legs
  • Evidence of iliac artery blockage on vascular imaging
  • As part of limb salvage procedures to prevent amputation

Benefits of Iliac Angioplasty and Stenting:

  • Improves circulation to the legs and lower body
  • Relieves leg pain, heaviness, and walking fatigue
  • Minimally invasive procedure with fast recovery
  • Performed under local anesthesia – no hospital stay
  • Reduces risk of future arterial blockage or complications
