What Is Atherectomy?
Atherectomy is a minimally invasive Cath Lab procedure that removes plaque buildup inside the arteries to restore healthy blood flow. It is commonly used to treat Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), which can cause cramping, pain, or fatigue in the legs while walking.
How Atherectomy Works
Using image guidance, your specialist advances a small catheter into the narrowed artery. A plaque-removal tip (rotational, orbital, directional, or laser) carefully clears the blockage to improve circulation. Atherectomy can be performed alone or combined with angioplasty and/or stenting to help keep the artery open.
Who Might Benefit:
- Patients with PAD who have lifestyle-limiting leg pain or cramping with walking (claudication)
- Recurrent or tough, calcified blockages not well-suited to balloon angioplasty alone
- Non-healing foot/leg wounds related to poor arterial flow (as part of a limb-salvage strategy)
Benefits of Atherectomy:
- Minimally invasive outpatient procedure
- Targets plaque directly to improve blood flow
- Often improves walking comfort and wound healing potential
- Can be combined with angioplasty and stenting when needed
- Personalized device selection based on plaque type and artery location
