Varicose Vein Treatment

Varicose veins develop when the valves inside the veins weaken or are damaged, allowing blood to pool and increasing pressure. Over time, factors such as prolonged standing, hormonal changes, and weakened vein walls can cause the veins to enlarge, twist, and become more visible beneath the skin.
Normally, blood flows upward through the leg veins toward the heart, working against gravity. Tiny, one-way valves prevent blood from flowing backward. When these valves weaken or become damaged, blood can flow backward and pool in the legs. This condition, known as venous insufficiency, increases pressure in the veins and can contribute to varicose veins.
As blood pools in the veins, increased pressure can enlarge them and make them bulge beneath the skin. This buildup can also cause common varicose vein symptoms, including leg heaviness, aching, and fatigue, especially after long periods of standing.
Varicose veins can cause noticeable changes in appearance and uncomfortable symptoms, including leg swelling, itching, aching, and muscle cramps. These symptoms may worsen throughout the day, particularly after prolonged standing, and can become more noticeable in the evening or at night.
Varicose veins can range from small, bluish-green veins to large, twisted veins that bulge beneath the skin. While larger veins may indicate more advanced vein disease, even small visible veins can sometimes signal underlying venous insufficiency or other circulation problems that may require evaluation.
Consult a vein specialist if you have persistent leg pain, itching, or swelling, even if symptoms seem mild. More advanced signs of venous disease may include skin discoloration, dryness, redness, and flaking. Bleeding from a varicose vein, which can sometimes occur after a hot shower, requires immediate medical attention and may indicate advanced vein disease.
Whether you’ve been diagnosed with varicose veins, are seeking a second opinion, or are experiencing concerning leg symptoms, a comprehensive vein screening can help identify underlying circulation problems and determine the most appropriate treatment options.
